It looks like LG’s G4 Stylus has a successor on its way, as LG has formally announced the LG Stylus 2 ahead of MWC 2016. Like its predecessor, the Stylus 2 is an entry-level handset and, as its namesake implies, the marque feature here is the phone’s built-in stylus.
While nowhere near the same league as Samsung’s S-Pen, LG says that the stylus pen found on the upcoming handset has a nano-coated tip that supposedly offers greater accuracy compared to your run-of-the-mill rubber-tipped styluses.
Turning to the hardware, the LG Stylus 2 is powered by a 1.2GHz quad-core processor with 1.5GB RAM. Other specs include 16GB storage, microSD, a 5.7-inch 720p display, a 13MP rear cam, 8MP front cam, LTE, and a 3000 mAh battery. The Stylus 2 is available in three colors – white, titan, and brown. On the software front, you’ll find Android 6.0 Marshmallow with LG UI on-top.
The Stylus 2 includes some stylus-optimized extras such as a feature called Pen Pop – a mode that toggles a special shortcut menu when the stylus is removed – and Pen Keeper, which notifies you if you are walking away from your stylus (it can detect that you are in motion, and that your stylus isn’t sheathed). We also imagine there’s several apps included to help make the most of the stylus, though numerous 3rd party drawing and notetaking apps should place nicely as well.
Judging by the spec sheet, the phone doesn’t appear to be a massive jump forward when compared to last year’s G4 Stylus (aka G Stylo), but an improved stylus and better out-of-the-box software could be enough to win the hearts of LG fans looking for a budget-oriented device. Speaking to that end, LG suggests the phone will be aggressively priced.
LG will formally show off the Stylus 2 at MWC 2016, where we expect to learn more details about the device and how it differs from its predecessor.
