After much leaking and teasing, the Meizu Pro 6 has been officially unveiled in Beijing today. The smartphone boasts some impressive sounding specifications in a cost effective package that undercuts most other flagship smartphones. Let’s take a look.
Delving right on in to the specification, the Meizu Pro 6 boasts a 5.2-inch Super AMOLED display with a 1920 x 1080 resolution. Just like Huawei and Apple, Meizu has included its own 3D Press display technology, adding in some extra software functions when you press lightly on the display.
The Meizu Pro 6 is powered by a hefty deca-core MediaTek Helio X25 CPU, which packs two Cortex-A72 CPU cores at 2.5GHz, four A53s at 2.0GHz, and four more A53s at 1.4GHz into a single package. This CPU is a timed exclusive for Meizu. There’s also a Mali-T880MP4 GPU clocked at 700MHz for gaming and the like, and the SoC is backed up by 4GB of LPDDR3 RAM. Internal memory options are available in either 32GB or 64GB configurations, but there doesn’t appear to be a microSD card slot if you need more. There’s a lot of processing power here, but just two heavy lifting CPU cores might leave the handset wanting in some scenarios. Although this might make up for the 2,560mAh battery, which is a little on the small side.
The core camera technology remains unchanged from Meizu’s only slightly older Pro 5, as the Pro 6 features the same 21 megapixel Sony IMX230 image sensor with laser & Phase Detection autofocus technologies. However, Meizu states that it has customized the module and lens assembly to reduce its thickness, and has incorporated a 10-LED ring flash around the camera. The front facing camera retains the familiar 5 megapixel sensor too.
Along with 3D Touch, the Meizu Pro 6 boasts a USB Type-C port, an improved 0.2-second recognition time fingerprint sensor, and mCharge 3.0 fast charging capabilities as nice little extras. There are also two nano-SIM trays, a Cirrus Logic CS43L36 audio chip, and Android 6.0 Marshmallow software with the company’s FlyMe 5.6 UI on board.
Meizu was also keen to draw attention to the handset’s design at the launch, citing that the Pro 6 uses 48 percent less plastic than the iPhone’s design. The handset is built from a single metal uni-body and the design will be very familiar to fans of Meizu’s smartphone line-up.
Overall it seems that the Meizu Pro 6 is more of a refinement than a generational leap over the Pro 5, as some aspects of the phone have barely changed at all. The price remains highly competitive though, with the 32GB model retailing for ¥2,499 (just under $390) and the 64GB variant priced at ¥2,799 (approximately $430). Meizu Pro 6 pre-orders are available in black, silver, and gold color options.
